In response to Paul Bodnar being named the new Global Head of Sustainable Investing at BlackRock, Casey Harrell, Senior Strategist of The Sunrise Project, issued the following statement on behalf of the BlackRock’s Big Problem network:
“It is an encouraging sign that BlackRock would hire someone of Paul’s caliber to lead the company’s implementation of its net zero commitment and other climate goals. In my experience, Paul is knowledgeable, collaborative, and really committed to helping drive down emissions and solve the climate crisis. Yet the task of implementing BlackRock’s net zero vision is an immense challenge and one that will require the utmost urgency, not only from Paul but the entire senior team at BlackRock.
“Aligning the economy with a 1.5ºC goal must be BlackRock’s top priority. Paul’s challenge, which he shares not only with BlackRock but the entire financial industry, will be turning ambitious rhetoric into meaningful action. That can only mean an urgency to drive down emissions, with science-based, near-term targets, across all sectors of the economy, without relying on ineffective carbon offsetting.
